Pastoral Approach to Preaching

My Pastoral Approach to Preaching:

I was ordained to the Christian Ministry in June, 1969.  During my full-time ministry career, I served as the Pastor of several different churches, located in Brookline & Mason, NH: Providence, RI; Brooklyn, NY; Rochester, NY; Corning, NY; Watsontown, PA; Jersey Shore, PA; and Montgomery, PA

I have always loved my involvement in the preaching of God's Word.  I approach this task very humbly and prayerfully, and I do sense the Holy Spirit working in my mind and heart as I choose each subject for preaching.  The three-year rotation of lectionary texts are always available to me, and for the most part, I choose from one of those weekly texts, which include a scripture passage from the Old Testament, the Psalms, the Gospels, or the Epistles.  However, there are times when I am led to search for a specific text which will help speak to something that might be happening in my congregation or in the larger community.  At times, I have also included other resources besides scripture, like when I made use of lyrics from "The Weight" by The Band, which repeats these memorable and meaningful words: "Take a load off Mary, and put the load, right on me".

My sermons are timed by way of using only four well-spaced pages of paper for each one.  I believe interest level can remain higher when the words spoken are fewer.  I enjoy using humor at different places in my sermons, and believe that a message should always cause people to think about the subject at hand.  Hopefully, people can take something home with them to think about during the week.

I would love to have you come and worship with us, and if you have a comment or question concerning my message, please chat with me about it.  There is always a lot of time to share together at our coffee hour.  God's Blessings!

From September through May, Sunday School is scheduled at 9:30 AM, and our Worship Service begins at 10:45 AM.   During the summer of 2018, we will continue to worship at 10:45 AM  (no Sunday School is offered during June through August).  Good refreshments and great fellowship are offered after every worship service.  All are welcome to attend and participate!
